Jason DeRouchie Named Old Testament Professor

DeRouchie PicBethlehem College and Seminary announces Jason S. DeRouchie as Associate Professor of Old Testament beginning Fall 2009. Dr. DeRouchie brings to BCS broad teaching, writing, and pastoral experience. He also comes with a passion to exalt Christ through the Old Testament, to confront the world with biblical truth, and to train the next generation of church leaders how better to handle their Hebrew Bibles.

DeRouchie has authored a book on OT discourse analysis (Gorgias, 2007), co-authored with Duane A. Garrett a beginning Hebrew grammar and workbook (B&H Academic, 2009), and is presently overseeing an OT thematic survey (Kregel) and writing a commentary on Deuteronomy (Zondervan).

DeRouchie will be leaving the position of Assistant Professor of Old Testament Studies and Hebrew at Northwestern College in St. Paul, MN, where he has served since 2005. Before this, he served as a pastor of discipleship in southern Indiana while completing his Ph.D. at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. At Bethlehem College and Seminary, DeRouchie will give oversight in the area of Old Testament and teach and write for the seminary in his areas of specialization: Deuteronomy, Old Testament biblical theology, Hebrew language, and Old Testament discourse analysis.

Dr. DeRouchie and his wife, Teresa, have been married since 1994, and God has blessed them with three children—Mary Jane, Ruthie, and Isaac. As a family, the DeRouchies enjoy camping, hiking, canoeing, and moose-watching. They also love academic ministry and praise the Lord for bringing them to Bethlehem College and Seminary.

What is Arcing?

At Bethlehem College and Seminary, one of the key Bible study methods taught is a method of discourse analysis called “arcing.” Arcing is a tool for following and documenting the flow of thought in the Biblical text. In brief, arcing involves dividing the text into its propositions and then noting the logical relationship between the propositions.

If this sounds interesting, then visit Biblearc.com, a new web-based arcing tool that allows you to arc passages of Scripture in English or Greek, and also provides an excellent video-based tutorial.

This web-based tool is used throughout our programs, including the seminary Greek exegesis classes and our lay leadership diagramming and arcing courses.

Al Mohler on Bethlehem College and Seminary

“Theological education should be deeply rooted in the local church. Every congregation should see the preparation of ministers as its own task, and not something that can be simply franchised to others. As president of a theological seminary, I am absolutely committed to work with churches as they strengthen their preparation of pastors and reclaim their own sense of mission. I long to see every church, in this sense, become a seminary. I’m thankful for John Piper and Bethlehem Baptist Church, and I am excited as I see a church assume responsibility and lead in a way that can influence so many others.”

–Al Mohler, President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky
